Waffles!

Waffles!

Room temperature butter and Aunt Jemima syrup are all I need. Oh and waffles. Yes, I like a little waffles with my syrup and butter. Waffles used to be square and come in small boxes, at least that’s what we always ate. Store bought, freezer burnt waffles. Nothing but the best. It didn’t matter…frozen waffles were the summer’s best weekday breakfast, along with a frozen can of Orange juice. Add 3 cans of cold water and stir. I looked all over for frozen square waffles and I don’t think they make them anymore. Eggo cornered the market on the round waffle. On a side note, no waffles were eaten during the photographing for this painting…but I have half a box left for tomorrow!

Saltwater Sweetness Taffy

Saltwater Sweetness Taffy

I hope they never change the way salt water taffy is packaged. The little wax paper on the ends that you simultaneously twist to unwrap. I love the colorful stripes- a playful work to paint! Candy lover Christmas gift!

Great piece of pop art for any decor, especially mid-century Modern!

Lime in the Coconut

Lime in the Coconut

As the Harry Nilsson song goes, you put the lime IN the coconut! I loved that song as a child. It never made sense to me (still doesn't) but its a catchy tune. This lime and coconut still life was fun to set up and paint, especially cracking the coconut!
The sliver of green on the lower left slice has a luminescent quality I strived to reproduce.

This modern still life would look great hanging in a kitchen or bar area. The texture of the coconut has a nice rustic quality.

Highlighted Route

Highlighted Route

Long gone are the days of paper maps and highlighters to plan the vacation route. Back in the day (!), usually Dad (because he was the driver), would have his coffee and decide the route to the vacation destination. This still life with the glasses, citronella candle on the vintage green picnic table, has carved in it some initials. Great gift for traveler!

I enjoyed the color in this painting! Red and greens always a hit!

Diner Coffee

Diner Coffee

Who doesn't love the shape and feel of a good diner mug? The REAL light cream, the weight of the mug, the perfect curve of the rim... it's more than a cup of coffee, it's a simple pleasure. Rather than clutter up this simple image with other items, I wanted the mug to be the center of focus. The tiny coffee bubbles and subtle cream floating atop the coffee is an familiar site begging for a sip! Sit a while with this cup of coffee- it never needs a refill! Great coffee lover gift or Christmas gift for coffee drinker!

Tub O'Soda

Tub O'Soda

It was July 16, 1971. The perfect summer day as I recall. My father was hosting the annual work picnic. I won a green raft that day for my athletic ability in the egg race! It was my biggest claim to fame as a 9 year old. I remember reaching into a tub of iced cold soda with what seemed like every variety ever invented. It was sheer heaven- all the FREE SODA I could drink! Pull the ring tab- wear it on your finger for a bit before carelessly dropping it somewhere in the grass. Take that long first sip…..ahhhhhhhhhh. Life was good.

Note: Look close! These cans are painting in the era of 1970's!

Who's Thirsty?

Who's Thirsty?

10" x 10" Oil on gessobord
We didn’t have water bottles- there was no sippy box, pouch or fancy energy drink. If you were outside playing, and you were thirsty, you would simply turn on the spigot, bend down a bit, wait for about 10 seconds until the cold water reached the end of the hose, then take a long, long gulp swallowing, swallowing and swallowing. Of course, you would then offer the hose to the next sweaty, out of breath neighborhood friend. If you were on your game that day, you might remember to turn off the hose. Or, your father might step in huge puddle and yell out ” Who left the dam hose on?”

Cherry Kool-AId

Cherry Kool-AId

Cherry Kool-Aid with vintage aluminum ice cube maker 10" x 10" Oil on gessobord

Making Kool-Aid was hit-or-miss. First, you had to have packet. Chances are, we didn’t have enough sugar to fill the measuring cup. Next, to find the pitcher- (dump out whatever old drink was brewing in that!) After accidentally snorting the unsweetened powder when you opened it, get your spoon, add sugar, stir, then pray that you would have ice in the ice-cube maker! If all was right with the world, you would have the perfect sugary cup of cherry Kool-Aid. All in a summer’s days work!

Frozen Pink Lemonade

Frozen Pink Lemonade

10" x 10" Oil on Gessobord
After ripping the plastic strip off the can, removing the aluminum disk from the end, Iwould hold that can for a few seconds then wait for the "scccuuuupppppp" sound as the plop of pink creamy ice fell into the pitcher. I remember being in such a hurry to make it that filling 3 whole cansof water seemed like an eternity. The sticky, gooey mess would be left on the counter, along with whatever utensil could find to make it. Then, after selecting a glass as impressive as this pink drink, I would find the perfect spot to enjoy it. The ritual involved with pink lemonade hasn't changed much and while buying a carton may seem easier, there is something about the canned frozen pink lemonade that remains my prefered method of classic, summer-must enjoyment.

I feel for this generation that didn't get to experience the Real Thing. The commercial- apple trees, honey bees and snow white turtle doves. Everyone knows things go better with Coke. Especially the mountains! Taking a freezing cold Coke out of a galvanized bucket of ice- there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer's day. It adds life! It's a natural!

Bread and Butter Pickets

Bread and Butter Pickets

Grandma's Bread and Butter Pickles, 6" x 6" Oil on gessoboard
Pickles is a fun word to say. And, they are fun to eat! My grandmother used to make bread and butter pickles. She always had on an apron (which she made) that was trimmed with rick-rack. There were special pickling tools and jars…a entire days worth of a process just for some pickles! The pickles were more precious than her tomatoes. We would only get one jar, with a special label. “Grandma’s Bread & Butter” with the year. I always thought she was stingy with her pickles, until I tried making them! It was so much work for such a small little condiment. Until I discovered that Vlassic makes a pretty mean sweet and sour pickle. Now, I eat pickles all year long! I bet you have a few jars in your refrigerator???

Salty Cucumbers

Salty Cucumbers

Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s meant pouring salt on just about everything. It also meant that anything was “snackable”, even cucumbers. Political correctness for food hadn’t quite hit mainstream. There were no “low sodium” foods, or very few. Snacking in the summer required creativity. With three brothers and sisters, scavenging for snacks meant taking a trip out to the garden and picking a ripe cucumber. I would cut it into thick slices and sprinkle salt on each slice. And that’s how we ate cucumbers in summer, as it was….

Sunday Breakfast

Sunday Breakfast

Not Saturday, or a weekday, but for whatever reason, my father felt Sundays were the day to eat donuts for breakfast. Most Sundays, there would be two white waxed paper bags filled with glazed, jelly or cinnamon twist donuts from Golden Krust Bakery sitting on the dining room table, next to the Sunday paper. We would all fight over how many we got to eat. Three felt like a breakfast- one just wasn't enough. As far as donuts go, the glazed seems the least decadent. It's so light! This particular donut was delicious- and it was breakfast, except on a Friday!

Cinnamon Toast

Cinnamon Toast

Cinnamon Toast on Wonder Bread, 6" x 6" Oil on gessobord

If you weren’t feeling too lazy, why not jazz up regular toast with some cinnamon sugar? A few slices of Wonder Bread, some butter if we were lucky, but it was usually margarine, cinnamon and sugar made the summer vacation a bit more exciting! This was a step above cereal as a breakfast alternative. French toast and waffles were next and pancakes- real pancakes made from the box! But cinnamon toast was great anytime. I remember experimenting at a friends with cinnamon sugar! We used confectionery sugar, butter and cinnamon and made a paste. To this day, I remember how that taste. We would eat it by the spoonful. I’ve grown up (some) but still love the taste of perfectly made cinnamon toast.

Wacky Birthday Cake

Wacky Birthday Cake

If there is one cake I remember best as a kid, it was Wacky Cake. My neighbor made this cake, and soon it found its way into our holiday traditions. Made without eggs, the depression era cake uses vinegar as a secret ingredient! Buttercream frosting sealed the deal! Today is my birthday. And what a better way to share my birthday with you…here’s a piece of cake. Honestly, I have a fond memory of my mother making strawberry cake for my birthday, with strawberry frosting. She covered it with foil so it would survive our drive to the Adirondacks. The hot weather melted the frosting, and the cake was a disaster. But my mom made if for me…that I will cherish forever. Happy Birthday to me!

PS. I did make a wacky cake for this painting. I cut the piece out and wrapped it in plastic (not foil!) and will enjoy it later tonight!

A Little Lemon

Everything always seems to be better when it has lemon in it. There was Lemon-Up Shampoo, and Lemon Pledge, Realemon Juice in a fake lemon plastic bottle. A little lemon goes a long way. It just seems to make everything a little better. Food tastes better with some lemon. The house seems cleaner when it smells lemony. Maybe its the bright color or the happy shape of a lemon. Whatever it is, I’m glad the lemon is here to stay.

That first bite of a peach can either be heavenly or so, so disappointing. Knowing when to take that first bite is the trick! So, you buy them at the farm stand and wait. Wait some more.
